my only concern is that the chat might not be searchable or that chat about specific Github issues may become fragmented

there is. but last time I was looking for it I couldn't find it and almost created a PR. think this info should be much more visible

The web site needs a redesign, but if you want to send a PR to add a link to the README that would be a good thing
That said, I don’t tend to check the mailing list very often
