RichElse
@RichElse
Hi...I'm completely new to Ruby but not to web development (.NET, .NET MVC, C#) so I'm interested (a) to get my environment set-up...think I eventually managed this with BitNami last night :clap: (b) best practice solution architecture (how I go about layering a solution as I would normally do in C#) (c) really anything about Ruby! :smile:
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
@RichElse Sounds great I'm sure somebody is up for that
RichElse
@RichElse
@sideshowcoder great! Looking forward to it.
stanpeev
@stanpeev
Hi all. I did a Rails bootcamp at Bloc, but struggled troughout and couldn't really grasp the basic concepts of programming and I'm continuing to learn on my own. Just wanted to ask if the Hacknights are newbie friendly, as I really want to attend one. :) Thanks in advance!
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
@stanpeev definitely! all skill levels always welcome :)
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
rubyhacknight/meetups#14 gonna do this today
Peter Saxton
@CrowdHailer
Hey I would like to look at types in ruby this time. either investigating contracts.ruby or dry-data
Louis Pilfold
@lpil
Boo, I didn't get a place :(
Will
@willvlad
Hey everyone
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
@lpil hope you still stop by :)
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
Anybody interested in helping out with rubyhacknight/meetups#15 tomorrow? Back to the rails roots building simple websites :smile:
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
that'll probably include everything including setting up the DNS and/or forwarding and fun stuff like that :D
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
Yes ;) and probably setting up a insert your favorite hosting provider aka Azure instance for the hosting?
Louis Pilfold
@lpil
Any reason not to use github & jekyll?
I feel like this content isn't going to change much, and everyone will know how to use git
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
it would depend what kind of content we want to make. but those are good options if we do go with mostly static
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
Yeah if we can go static sure :) kind of depends what we want to build
bonf
@bonf

Competitive salary.
Interested ? Drop me a line at jobs@populi.io
Louis Pilfold
@lpil
I just got an email notifying me of that spam job message. This is rather annoying. How do I disable that?
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
@lpil you can swtich your notifications settings for gitter I guess...
@bonf people in general don't react nicely to such messages, if you want to contribute to the community feel free to come to the meetup and participate on projects, otherwise we don't tonlerate random job search postings as ruby developer groups in general recieve a large amount of those.
bonf
@bonf
@sideshowcoder , sorry, can't delete the post now.
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
@bonf thats fine just wanted you to be aware :) thanks for getting back
Philipp Fehre
@sideshowcoder
hello everybody :)
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
good news everyone! here's a heroku for our app rubyhacknight.herokuapp.com
CNAME should be propagating right about now for the domain
githubemma
@githubemma

Hello!

I found your Ruby group a few days ago and I was wondering if maybe one/a few of you might be interested in working on a side-project with me. I realise you usually get together at Meetups to discuss Ruby things so if it would be ok, could I come along on the 19th and show you the idea I'm working on?

Louis Pilfold
@lpil
What's the project?
And of course you're welcome to come and chat about projects :)
Peter Saxton
@CrowdHailer
@githubemma definitely share your project, all sorts gets worked on at the meetup
githubemma
@githubemma
Thank you :) Yeh my project is aiming to link common information together onto one page. I'll try and explain more about it on the 19th. A fair bit of the site is already done but there's some parts which I'm not too sure about and was wondering if anyone might be interested in it too
Louis Pilfold
@lpil
Linky linky?
githubemma
@githubemma
I'm going to try make a page specifically for the 19th so I'll send the link over once I'm done
rcigor
@rcigor
hi all, what's the "program" for this evening's meetup?
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
@rcigor I think some of us may keep working on getting a site up, otherwise I think some others might be interested in doing some more katas
also sounds like @githubemma has a project to share :D
rcigor
@rcigor
I'll be up for helping with the site, what's the best way to catch up?
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
everything we have so far should be in the repo https://github.com/rubyhacknight/rubyhacknight
there are a few issues open there. basically, we have a domain, we have a basic Rails app, now we just need to make it awesome :D
stanpeev
@stanpeev
Hi all, Stan here - I'm a Ruby noob, working hard to become a ninja someday. Hope you're all doing well! I was wondering if the meetups are suitable for amateurs like myself?
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
absolutely! more than welcome for Rubyists of all skill levels :)
stanpeev
@stanpeev
Hi all, I'm well excited for my first meeting tomorrow, just wondering if I need to bring my own machine? Thanks in advance!
Louis Pilfold
@lpil
Not mandatory, but it's certainly useful if you want to do more than just chat :)
Greyyyyys
@Greyschale
hey @stanpeev, like @lpil said, best to bring your own if you want to hack :D unfortunately we don't have loaner laptops or anything
stanpeev
@stanpeev
@Greyschale @lpil thanks for the clarity! I am bringing my own :)
Drew Johnson
@mrknip
Hi all - I'm also a rank amateur coming to my first hacknight, and just thought I'd stick a quick hi up here as I'll be too late for the 'introduce yourself' bit tonight. Looking forward to it!
lbarasti
@lbarasti
Hello! I just made it through the waiting list! Tonight I'd like to introduce a gem I've been working on in the last few months.
https://github.com/lbarasti/yopt
I'd love to get some feedback from you. In case you are interested have a look at the README :)
