    and for example, the sales pitch for „rust is good for number crunching“ is different from „rust is a good language for web servers“, but both could be directed at pythonistas

    i have the feeling this section is hard to get right

    what do we want to achieve? get people interested in rust, of course. but how and why is the segmentation useful? my hunch is: create a „wow, thats cool“ moment that gives someone the incentive to really try rust out
    and to identify whats a „wow, thats cool“ moment for whom is hard and maybe it would be better to identify these moments and work back to the target group

    @MadMalik_twitter wonderful feedback, thank you!

    One quick note: we should make it clear that the playground on the landing page is editable. Somehow, despite having been doing things this way for a couple years, I didn’t know that! :grimacing:

    Hi guys,
    Would like to add a sketch I prepared about a year ago in a previous discussion on Github for discussion

    Home Page

    1. Top

      • Rust Logo and links for menu items (doc, forum, download, contribute/help, hamburger icon for other menu items)
    2. Next

    3. Examples

      • Feature list, on click right side code/video getting changed.
    4. Crates and areas uses Rust

      • short intro to crates , side crate downloads count & crate count
      • Links with/without images for pages like xi editor, hyper, nickel, Piston, arewewebyet and etc.
    5. Users/ Friends of Rust

    6. bottom

      • External links for fb, youtube, twitter, github, stackoverflow, blog and etc.

    Thanks

    Also would like to suggest to add a wiki page like Golang wiki,
    Haskell wiki for Rust core site, especially with the links for Learning resources . It will be helpful for newcomers to find good lerning resources for the core site. See, how many times new comers asked about good learning materials on Reddit

    Hi @dumindu! I am one of the people working on the site redesign. I believe @aturon gave us your sketch, which gave us some great ideas to work with. Thank you for that! Though I believe this chat is more about the content/writing than visual design.
    (Also not to be nit-picky but neither of us are guys)
    Dumindu Madunuwan
    @dumindu
    Glad it helped somehow :clap:

    @dumindu
    From where we can find the list of code samples which will be shown on home page?
    Florian Gilcher
    @skade
    has it been considered to add a page highlighting our video catalogue to the new page? (youtube.com/c/rustvideos
    madmalik
    @MadMalik_twitter
    @skade i think that would be a good idea

    @dumindu
    any initial prototype/ selected design for core site? and from where we can see the list of examples which are shown on home page?
    Romain Lepert
    @obust
    Hi, I stumbled upon Kotlin today and the main site seems to share a lot of the ideas mentioned in the dropbox papers https://kotlinlang.org/
    Florian Gilcher
    @skade
    I may be an outlier here, but I hate hero banners.
    Romain Lepert
    @obust

    I was mostly referring to the sections and how they articulate.

    • Hero banner and Why Kotlin -> Rust: headline and breakout boxes expanding the pitch
    • What does it look like -> Rust: Code examples highlighting its key selling points
    • Try Kotlin -> Rust: Getting Started: installation, IDE setup, etc.
    • Kotlin usage highlight -> Rust: production uses, sponsors ?
    • Stay in touch -> Rust: open source and community driven

    Keep or leave whatever you like. It's just an example of how those ideas can be displayed. Food for thoughts ;)

    @lbaillie
    What is a hero banner?
    madmalik
    @MadMalik_twitter
    @lbaillie these big browser-wide stock photos behind the title xD
    Lee Baillie
    @lbaillie
    oh, haha, gotcha
    yeah I'm not gonna let that happen :P

    My professional field is digital marketing with strong engineering background and some programming experience (old-school languages like basic, pascal and action script, lately web-technologies). Few weeks ago i finally dared to familiarize with Rust and became nuts about it. I'm delighted the beauty of the language and consistency of the ecosystem build around it. I would be happy if my help will be useful. Because of my experience (and lack of programming skills) I thought this task (new web page) is a right place to contribute.

    @aturon Hello, is this WG still active?
    Aaron Turon
    @aturon
    @sevastien hi! unfortunately, this WG is no longer active
    i should probably close down the room
    @sevastien i can put you in touch with Ashley Williams, who is overseeing web site work now, though!
    sevastien
    @sevastien
    @aturon hi, that would be great. Thx Aaron.
