Is rust still in alpha/beta stages?
Mar 06 2015 20:40
Rust is still alpha
First beta will probably be in 26 days
Assuming nothing goes wrong, the release after that should be 1.0 stable

So, in a nutshell, what problems does rust try to solve that others don't?
Mar 06 2015 20:44
Rust tries to be a systems language, in that it doesn't use a garbage collector, is native, and let's you do whatever low level unsafe things you need to do
While at the same time being a statically typed, memory safe language with a lot of high level constructs
It's one of the only languages that provides memory safety without a garbage collector, which requires the lifetime system which is unique to Rust

Interesting. So do you think it will have a lot of web/server applications or more so desktop stuff?
Mar 06 2015 20:48
It is very useful for server things, and as async and http libraries and frameworks like mio hyper and iron grow you'll see a lot more of that
It's also very useful for creating the various desktop command line utilities, as well as for making games
applications depends on GUI toolkits though, and Rust is lacking in the GUI area
