Strange. rustup.rsdocumentation says RUSTUP_HOME (default: ~/.rustup. On my machine it installed all toolchains into ~/.multirust. It this a recent change? Should I reinstall rustup?

Recent change I suspect. Check out multirust here -> github.com/brson/multirust
It is quite handy

rustup is the succusor of multirust
so there might be some “left-overs” from multirust in there

there are a lot of multirust leftovers, indeed. Here's the line where the config directory is set to .multirust: https://github.com/rust-lang-nursery/rustup.rs/blob/ba855de/src/rustup-utils/src/utils.rs#L451

A speed improvement over multirust I know some will welcome
it was never that big of an issue for me
What I was arguing for was a way to install to /opt so all of the users on a system can share the toolchain.
Looks like I need to investigate rustup

yeah, it would be nice the share the toolchains in /opt with other users. would also be nice to only download the toolchain only once per file hash (e.g. stable and 1.9.0 are currently the same, but are downloaded twice).

brson had always said that was a limitation in how the files are released.
If there is a way to query for hashes and use them then the path is pretty easy
