    not computer science
    there are a few fundamentals i still miss that make me get confused learning this stuff :)
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    you'll be fine, one of the prof's at ITP in NYU has been teaching BLE to students for their projects
    they seem to be picking it up quickly
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    amazing
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    even though they don't have a computer science background
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    yeh
    i do think there's going to be lots of opportunity in it
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    all the ble peripherals people are using these days
    nice!!
    i'd be all over that
    if i was in NY already.. and a student
    hehe
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    haha, ya
    i went their last year for a BLE "doc-a-thon" tom igoe organized
    it was pretty good, it's all on github
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    thanks sandeep! lots to do
    bookmarking all these physical computing guys too
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    good read, short and sweet
    let me know once you are settled in NY, I'll intro you to Tom
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    cheers, that'd be great
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    you'll see lots of cool projects there, similar to the ones in your portfolio
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    his site looks familiar actually, i think i used it when i was working with the arduino yun a while back
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    nice, he's also one of the co-founders of Arduino :)
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    have you tried putting nodejs on android yet?
    apparently it's possible
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    not personally, someone emailed me and said they got noble running on it ~6 months ago
    Roo Williams
    @roowilliams
    nice!
    right, i'd better try and get some work done
    speak soon sandeep, cheers for the links!
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    cool, np ... later

    @Drenerdo
    Hello World!
    Can I use gimbal beacons with this npm package?
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    hey @Drenerdo, they can if they are configured in iBeacon mode
    I have some code snippets to detect them and report temperature + battery level, but they rotate their id's, so you would need to query their undocumented REST API to map
    Andre Smith
    @Drenerdo
    Awesome
    I would love to check out the code snippet but in the meantime I will experiment some more on my end
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry

    @Drenerdo turns out I don't have a code snippet, but here's a summary of my findings:

    "960C4A 9B-244C-11E2-B299-00A0C60077AD" represents:
    Battery level = 0xa - 8 = 2
    8 is the fixed offset
    Temperature = 0x9b - 70 = 85 °F
    70 is the fixed offset

    "8C00453659EC9C476B84CE" is the payload that is looked up in the cloud service (0x008c is the Gimbal Company ID).

    If you modify https://github.com/sandeepmistry/noble/blob/master/examples/advertisement-discovery.js to start scanning with duplicates, you can use the above info to extract battery level and temp
    the 0x8c.... is the value of the manufacturer data
    Andre Smith
    @Drenerdo
    Thank you sir
    JoshuaDeaton
    @JoshuaDeaton
    Did something change with the plugin? I've tried installing with and without sudo and using the -g and I still get the following error when trying to start my server: Module._extensionsextension;
    node-bleacon is the only required variable in the server
    Sandeep Mistry
    @sandeepmistry
    @JoshuaDeaton can you provide more details please
    Nick Duncan
    @httpNick
    Do you know if this module would work with react-native to create an android app?
    I think you can just add npm modules to the app, but im still learning how it works.
    Christopher Dro
    @christopherdro
    @httpNick: that’s actually something @jacobrosenthal and I are working on
