I'm running debian:packageBin, which is 1GB, when I unpack it, the data.tar.gz is most of the size (as expected), but when I unpack that one, I only get about 250MB of files.
And tar tf tells me there's multiple occurrences of the same file.

I upgraded to 1.1.4, and now it's 1.7G O.o

That sounds not good. Can you reproduce this with a simple build? And see what files are being duplicated?
And: are you using native dpkg or jdeb?

Default is native dpkg. With JDebPlugin you can enable a different implementation
