@matanster dependsOn(subproject % "provided")

@pfn Thanks but that conflicts with the use of sbt-assembly, which avoids packing dependencies marked as "provided", which is really the deadlock in this situation. so I'll live with the superfluous resolution I was trying to avoid here, keeping this open as an issue in my project and in this sbt/sbt#2255.

huh?
why would it conflict with assembly, just mappings in assembly ++= ...
there's no issue

If I defined a dependency via compile <<= (compile in Compile) dependsOn myTask how come my task does not run when I run compile:compile and only when I run compile?
Reason being, this is in a project that is depended upon by another project. And when I run compile on the parent project, it runs compile:compile on the depended upon project.

@pfn sorry but it is hard to guess how the DSL should be used for explicitly adding a dependency to a jar, to bypass sbt-assembly's default exclusion behavior when provided.
Can you please be more specific?
@JohnMurray have you triedcompile in Compile <<= (compile in Compile) ?

@matanster ahh, that worked. I'm not sure I fully understand why, but thank you. I need to find more resources to read on Scopes
@JohnMurray not much to read, just use inspect a lot

I used inspect, but I still didn't understand the context enough to derive the correct answer.

there isn't much more to use other than inspect
basically look at the first delegates line if any
that generally is your hint of where to make changes, @JohnMurray
