question regarding PhantomReferences to @/all : i am trying to introduce a PhantomReference-based cache system for textures in scenery, such that i do not need to reallocate texture if not necessary, and can free resource on the GPU if the texture is not used anymore. the pr is there: scenerygraphics/scenery#335, if anyone is able to give some feedback about the technical correctness of that, i'd be very grateful for that

maybe i did not understand imglib2-cache correctly, but how does that solve the issue of being able to free up gpu resources when needed?
i'm happy to refactor my code to use that if it help with that

i'm trying to solve two issues here
one is that a texture might be reused by several objects in the scenegraph, so i have the hashmap of a <texture object, phantomref to actual texture on the gpu>
so if i encounter the texture again, i reuse it

That sounds like it should be weakref instead of phantomref

second, if there are no more references to it, and becomes available in the reference queue, i clean up on the gpu
yeah i was not entirely sure about that
