it's a whole roll20 playlist, but the very first video is comparing roll20 to fantasy grounds
from a guy who has used both to run campaings

i'll check it out, although 79 videos is a bit overwhelming

ha, yeah. i was actaully watching another playlist from this same guy, where he breaks down all the character classes in 5E. 207 videos
watching that while hacking on marvin :)

i got to Ranger. I guess i'll start with Rogue tomorrow
serverless is pretty neat. there's some quirks around multiple AWS profiles and dynamo (see that bug ticket for more) but for the most part it's pretty slick

Yeah, I chose serverless stuff to hopefully give it a good trial and see how it works out.
yeah man! thanks for the help! I'm really excited about this stuff.

also, don't know how froggy you're feeling with the graphics stuff, but there's this: https://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/

I thought about it and will take a peek.
at the moment thought i'm only doing 2D (top down visuals)
might have to make the Lumberyard and Gamelift stuff a one day goal.

ordered a good mic for the campaign
re: tile builder. for me, the more “realistic” a tile is, the more distracting it is. because if it’s relistic, then i expect it to be an accurate represntation of what i’m doing. if it’s abstract shapes, then i don’t have that expectation. what it comes down to is i need one thing from a dungeon map: a more-or-less accurate representation of distance and path. what i don’t need: rocks and moss.

That makes sense @omnomicon
It also falls in line with the way I want to DM

agreed, and it sucks.

i think roll20, et al went down the unopinionated route and necesarily have complicated (feature-rich!) map editors. i think there’s room for a super-opinionated map editor that only allows the most minimal maps possible. putting the description, the sounds, the smells of the space squarely on the DM, where I think it belongs

yeah
Logan and other DM's I've watched call that "Theater of the mind" type of DMing
