@vid I think its beneficial when questions are asked about a specific technology, it helps you understand, and it also helps the person answering understand further, as teaching is the best way to learn!
I like to answer any question thats thrown at me if its possible for me to understand, as I learn further in the process

@vid
@fabiancook I appreciate that, but due to other work I'm only periodically able to focus on the Solid world (not able to keep up with convos/repos) so I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. The pattern is I get well into the catching up but then have to switch gears, so am back to square zero. Which is why I'd like to find a good in person session, it'd be a lot of context in one place and I could actually situate a project in Solid and continue from there.
Fabian Cook
@fabiancook
Thats understandable, for anyone who is working on solid atm, I'm sure there are lots of people happy to answer specific questions though, just putting that out there
On another note, something I have been thinking about with things like chat, and services that require multiple people to co-operate, users should be always writing to their own pods, and then users who want to be able to read that data is given permission, where they can then duplicate the data into their own pod and keep their own history
The person posting a message could do a double write, one to theirs and one to another, but when someone is offline, they can only ever write to their own
So default their own, when its possible to replicate to another, replicate

nb: i’m testing zulip, and am liking it. it has integrations (like other similar chat platforms) https://zulipchat.com/integrations/ | therein also, an API. ;)

@Mitzi-Laszlo is there are a list of events that will be happening, esp during June-August (I'll be travelling around a bit then, so will be out of New Zealand and closer to the action)

I think John bruce spoke at a conference recently? In the last few weeks? I was getting prompts about it. I'm hoping the video is online somewhere?

@SolidToronto
Hi everyone! The first toronto meet up is confirmed for May 13th 5:30pm. RSVP at
https://www.llbrandlab.com/events/solid-toronto-meetup
We have received tremendous interest from the local community here! Can’t wait for it to happen
But we need help form the global community to refer speakers to us. Not many people know about Solid here. Thank you very much!

@timbl re ‘private party’ i wonder if that method can be used to produce a different WebID-AUTH variant.
the dweb meetup video @~35m starts to get kinda awesome
noting - imho - awesome hack
Fabian Cook
@fabiancook
@mediaprophet HTTP Signatures do a good job of auth in a nicer way than that. Private party really is just using a different transport to send encrypted messages, once you're part of that party though.... doesn't give much confidence.

@ghost~57bc59d440f3a6eec060e93b
i’ve been a big advocate of HTTP Signatures (and WebDHT for that matter) for many years, but, they decided to go in other directions (money problems i suspect, played a role).
well, fairly sure money problems played a role, as if i had the money, we’d be playing with tools that still don’t exist ;)
Fabian Cook
@fabiancook
Unsure what you mean by money problems? The drafts are still being worked on? Or are you meaning that there is no final standard? I don't think they should be dismissed because of "money problems".

I was involved in starting the credentials CG (which spawned out of the web payments cg) back in 2014 https://www.w3.org/community/credentials/2014/08/06/call-for-participation-in-credentials-community-group/

the ability to fund work that relates to tech production that provides natural persons the beneficial ownership of their data, was severely lacking and indeed under attack by sophistocated actors who knew exactly what they were doing (whilst their now ‘pivoting’ to suggest they were unaware, etc.).

Therein - we need to fund people who work online. sadly, business models to do so have resulted in far too much ‘web slavery’. there were union movements in the past, they’ll be a new one soon imho - i think gov will love it too, as the outcome should help re:distribute wealth; whereby the economic participation of all americans, makes silicon valleey problems minor by comparison.

but - point is, there’s work that could be done - but hasn’t been done, because we haven’t known how to fund it.

without the leadership of TimBL, i think it would still be significantly less safe to do this work; and that, we wouldn’t have as much interest in it, as we do now due to his choices.

all forms of slavery are valuable to those who meaningfully gain from the use of the ‘resources’.

This all sounds very political

pyamids one day, a journey that is known now as the formation of the jewish people, the next.

WW2 undertakes acts to harm all forms of human dignity - UN & Universal declaration of human rights, thereafter.

I started on putting that into RDF (first time any human has started such a thing? for some reason… https://github.com/WebCivics/community/blob/master/ontologies/UDHR_update.ttl ) but not much interest in helping to finish the job…

Darkness before the light, which in-turn makes useful the ‘wake up call’…

Yes. Very Political.

Fabian Cook
@fabiancook

i think it would still be significantly less safe to do this work

Safe as in, you don't think it will lead somewhere? Or physically safe?

I don't feel like this should be a place to talk about politics like this. I'm here to talk about tech. Maybe I am wrong.

doing a bunch of work on ‘knowledge worker conditions’. therein, people who work online (if they’re able to - which may not be the case in places like china) - then the ability to do tiny micropayments to end-up paying someone a way, through thousands of payments for a fraction of a cent
can be done, if the means to do so is created.
like the UDHR stuff - for some reason, it’s fallen in the ‘out of scope’ category.
but, we’re making progress. with more money, we’d make more progress.
Fabian Cook
@fabiancook
UDHR can be defined with RDF, but should be out of scope of the technology stack

workers in the industrial era were more likely to be physically injured.

THe problems for people who work online, are different.
