Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
i just find the gitter web interface to be too much clutter
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
So-so... trying to gather thoughts together while dealing with neuropathy is a real PITA.
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
yikes
you still in vancouver?
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
yeah
Henry Story
@bblfish
@konobi I have not seen N J Wildberger's videos on youtube. Any reason I should have? (There's a lot to learn out there)
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
@bblfish he covers linear algebra in a pretty unique way (among other topics)... which has some relevance to sparql
(geometric/intuitive thinking)
Henry Story
@bblfish
Could be good. I thought I'd never came to use my A level (S-level actually) algebra again, and then with category theory I discovered that programming is algebra. So I should do a refersher course.
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
i've been plodding through physics and math lectures myself for the last few years, it's how i knock myself out at night
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
@doriantaylor sounds familiar ^_^
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
most recently gilbert strang's ocw
now i'm onto 3b1b but there are too many ads
(when looking at it on a phone at least)
i should compile a list
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
3b1b++

@bblfish
If you want to get a quick overview of how CT ties into programming, check out the talk by Bartosz Milewski The Maths Behind Types.
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
yeah i watched all the bartosz lectures earlier this year
i keep meaning to order a copy of the book
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
yeah i have a pdf somewhere but i kinda like the dead tree version of that kind of thing
Henry Story
@bblfish
A large screen that one can turn veritcally helps a lot in sparing trees. I read nearly everything that way.
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
i have been considering getting a full-page e-ink tablet
Henry Story
@bblfish
There is also a lot of interesting work on databases in category theory that is also very helpful for when thinking about linked-data. (And I think that it can't be long before this is tied into RDF too).
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
yeah just don't say the word "morphism" in front of a client
Henry Story
@bblfish
yeah, I suppose it depends a lot on what client. :-)
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
indeed
yeah it informed my thinking of bolting RDF to REST a few years back
hypermedia as the engine of the worst acronym in the world and all that
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
I really need to get some clear headed time at some point to get into Representation Theory... since things keep pointing me in that direction
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
reads as a patch between abstract algebra and linear algebra?
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
and throw in category theory for good measure
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
interesting
i only got interested in linear algebra because i was trying to get up to speed on stochastic processes
normally i don't really care for numbers
but i got interested in stochastic processes because i got interested in modeling certain processes we might all be familiar with
(cough software time/cost estimation cough)
Scott McWhirter
@konobi
@doriantaylor Booles algebra (not the boolean algebra) kinda helped bridge my comfort there... njwildberger covers it quite a bit
Dorian Taylor
@doriantaylor
cool i'll look at it
Dorian Taylor

Mike Adams
@mikeadams1
If solid is all about linked data and query by machine why is solid.community private?
both unreadable
Mike Adams
@mikeadams1
That is not in the spirit of decentralization, is it? I mean, if google can’t crawl these servers, how can they be tested?
Mike Adams
@mikeadams1
At present time, unless robots.txt is saying detach me for all data, solid is a silo and not decentralization
Julian Cole
@Julian-Cole
Hi @mikeadams1 i'm no expert in seo but couldn't you just submit single pages and use google site maps?
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
I mean as follows: IF I do work (be it coding, be it physical) I try to do it proper. cu at 10 eastern in the auth panel. I find it amazing I got the TLS-Login finally functional.........
Mike Adams
@mikeadams1
@Julian-Cole Why does there always have to be an alternative? https://inrupt.net is not private, so why would solid.community or solid.authing.cn be private unless, there is some data there that, they do not want showing up in search. That to me is censorship. We should not be saying to the world that only certain variables of data are acceptable to store, and in an effort to keep out certain data from being queried, we are going to tell search bots to stay out. Is this a web decentralization project or, should it be renamed Solid Silo?
