And what about fake news: what if you get political and create WebID username headlines like https://president-trump-resigns.inrupt.net or, https://trump-declares-constitution-invalid.inrupt.net? so should WebID usernames be like a UUID's to prevent what some would consider spam, or abuse?

@mikeadams1 If you ask me, any system that doesn't provide total anonymity and holds public data in relation to users can be used to "score" people in some way.
Aron Homberg
@kyr0
@mikeadams1 Regarding the idea of reviews and rating, it's the same old discussion of freedom vs. security. I believe in the open web and I think any hierarchy of "power" and "control" regarding user generated content contradicts it's core values and leads to misuse and injustice at some point in time. The decentralized web gives us the one-time opportunity to give data into the hands of the users -- and into their responsibility as well. At the same time, a decentralized web requires a responsible use of it. For me, solid feels like a highway in the form of an asterisk... you can drive in any direction with any vehicle. May it be a bike or a tank. But once there is censorship, it would become a censored decentralized web. It is a philosophical question. But once one influential organization goes in the one way or another, towards freedom or security, we can be sure that it sets the "defaults" for the whole community. And so, I think the decision to introduce such measures should be very well thought out.

@JordanShurmer
It may turn out that there are just different philosophies across different Pod providers... Like some may end up enforcing strict rules and real person identification etc. etc. while others let whatever happens happen

@kyr0 All good points. But, censorship is no guarantee of security. Censorship is used by socialists governments all over the world to act as a sword over their people, and not as a shield of protection (security).

@JordanShurmer
we're not talking about govs here though. we're talking about individual solid server's right? It's more like a Terms of Use aggrement or EULA or something of that nature.

IMHO, If the solid server I am lead to believe is for Americans, and it is located in Germany, then the potential for my rights to be brought into conformity with German law could be considered as a breach of the public trust, especially, if it was the intent to bring another sovereign nations citizens into subjection surreptitiously .

Yeah, right, that's why I'm against censorship. Wherever there is power, there will be misuse

Yep, solid is decentralized, so everybody can decide for her/himself how to deal with that. But I agree with the basic idea of discussing such things -- because once major pod providers set their EULA/Terms of use in some way it acts as a signal to others. But anyhow, I think there are more important things to solve first :)

@mikeadams1 as you seem to question my motives, I stumbled upon solid, began experimenting and wanted to contribute something useful in the public interest. yes I' m hobby linuxer and not a full pro and wouldn' t call myself a disciple but a bit in that direction. we really have high potential. and I' m still fighting beginner' s bugs.....
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
guess we' re all still kinda exploring the whole thang
Ghost
@ghost~5bfd3ed4d73408ce4fb0367e
@ewingson Hey man, not sure where you got that from, I am not questioning your motives at all. AFAIK I was responding to @kyr0 , sorry for any misunderstanding.
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
sorry,just wanted to keep the discussion alive, I happen to be a pod-provider from germany and I thought you meant me.....
Ghost
@ghost~5bfd3ed4d73408ce4fb0367e
@kyr0 agreed but, I hope that the issues regarding robots.txt gets solved too.
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
sorry misunderstanding always better to talk.....

@ewingson No, not at all, my bad, just speaking in general did not mean to single you out.
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
@mikeadams1 no my fault, I think we need lotsa pod-providers and the tech sometimes overburdens me but am happy to have https://solidweb.org up and running so far ... ;-)
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
perhaps should have put the server in finland, who knows, (just kidding)
Ghost
@ghost~5bfd3ed4d73408ce4fb0367e
Thats great man, so glad your on board and doing well with your pod server. Lots of issues to discuss about the future of solid and where we go and what we do with it, I still think that this is all in its infancy and lots of stuff to still work out. I don't see solid doing anything public for along time, and really, I am not sure it will ever be mainstream.
lol
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
we have to do it drop by drop
Jules Cole
@Julian-Cole
hi @ewingson just out of interest how much pod space do you allow for a pod account?
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
no idea how do I find that limit ?
guess it' s completely open
should have said 'set it' instead of 'find it'
or using default if that exists
Jules Cole
@Julian-Cole
lol - no idea as i'm a front-end guy; perhaps it defaults to sensible amount; someone else might know what it defaults to.
Ghost
@ghost~5bfd3ed4d73408ce4fb0367e
I think the quota set that limit I would @Vinnl_gitlab that question, for sure, he will know. I thought it was 24 MB
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
I have five users so far including myself
and permanently learning lessons

OOh darn, do you want some more subscribers, because I can be a pod squatter on yours for sure. Can I inundate you with accounts?
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
for sure I am listed here https://github.com/solid/pods as experimental
was hard to follow the authentication panel today but most of the folks are very open-minded

For sure, could not agree more, they are very welcoming and absolutely first class individuals.

@ewingson
remember I do that in spare time and don' t know if I can deliver high professional support but I contribute everything I can

I think solid can be pimped out in so many areas but, pod providers need to determine if they accept democratic activism or not in advance
Deep inside us all, we are activists. And we are pretty stern on the way we see things, so, if some Johnny come lately decides to start out with freedom and create actions against activists, that will turn off allot of people. So I see myself providing pods for those who want to be outspoken.

somewhere I read last week the expectations exceed the possibilities of the system but I think on the long run we can only win
Ghost

agreed!

@Julian-Cole
@ewingson i just signed up to your pods; seems its set to about 21Mb-ish i can't upload much more than that.
Jordan Shurmer
@JordanShurmer
haha
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
okay on todo find and set that parameter
Ghost
@ghost~5bfd3ed4d73408ce4fb0367e
Look at the quota, I think you can change that.
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
I found the parameter but will set it tomorrow as I need my nightly coffee now ;-)
Jules Cole
@Julian-Cole
what was it set to?
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
not looked it up yet its a server-side.ttl.inactive so its default when I rename the file I can set it
just have found and bookmarked the readme so far guess due to different timezones we'll see us the other days,okay ?
