@sideshowtom The namespace is http not https.

@sideshowtom
oops i just copied the link from safari on my ipad
Sarven Capadisli
@csarven
@sideshowtom Feel free to raise spec questions in https://gitter.im/solid/specification or on GitHub with the same path. There is also https://github.com/solid/vocab that's intended as the place to request/register etc terms.
Tom Gallivan
@sideshowtom
ok i will ask at ../specification
Sarven Capadisli
@csarven
Hmm, not sure what your Safari is doing.. but it is really http!
The base is definitely set to http
and as far as I know or can tell, http doesn't redirect to https for that URL
If you can pass it on in the forum that http is the canonical, that'd be great. LOV might want to correct it.

Hello all. So I just stumbled across this place. can anyone explain or point me to an explanation of how Solid "decentralizes" the internet that has been taken over by Google/Amazon/Facebook etc. I'd really love to learn more, been into tech for about 20 years now
Matthias Evering
@ewingson
it' s a community-driven thang that seperates data from apps, providing storage on the NSS(Node Solid Server) and Web Identity Management. in the field of Linked Data we use kindof a lot RDF/Turtle and a good starting point is https://solidproject.org
we plan to use lotsof little sites (PODs and Apps) instead of the 3 Big Ones you mentioned
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
Thanks, I took a look at the site. However, I'm still a little confused. The vast majority of the internet is really not on any of those big 3 companies I mentioned. People that use the big tech platforms now do so because they are easy to use and some of them, even though they know their data is being abused and sold for profit that they get no part of, still use them anyway. How does Solid get people to stop using Google/Apple/Facebook/Twitter and all these other companies who are controlling information flow and selling users data to make them rich and keep us poor? How do we get people off Google's search engine, is there a search engine for solid data? How do we get people off Facebook so that they can control their own data and out of these echo chambers caused by them and other social media giants?
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
I'll keep reading up on stuff, maybe I'll find answers to these questions, I was just hoping for a short general summary on how decentralization from the tech giants happens when people are so anchored to current mainstream platforms.
Mark Hughes (happybeing/theWebalyst)
@happybeing
@Scythesniper these are questions which are difficult to answer because we can't know why or how people will migrate. You could have asked the same questions about many entrenched products, MySpace being one, Yahoo another. Existing platforms have inertia, but everything changes, and the thing we know is that there has to be a place for people to migrate to.
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
I agree, however I'm not talking about getting people to move to a new platform per se. More like, is there a plan to get Solid integrated into existing platforms, without "flipping the whole table over"? Does it just come down to building apps that perform integration with those existing platforms?
Does that make sense? idk, maybe I'm just dumb lol
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
Maybe an example would help: Say I've got my data on a pod and I have an app that performs the same functions as Facebook running on a device which is linked to the data in said pod. How would I engage with users who are still using actual Facebook, and how would they engage with me if I'm not using Facebook?
Dmitri Zagidulin
@dmitrizagidulin
@Scythesniper part of the answer is technological, and part political. the existing platforms that /allow/ integration - no problem, we can integrate with them.
and some, it鈥檚 just not possible
although Facebook won over MySpace by cross-posting to and integrating with MySpace, they have since lobbied US laws (and altered their own terms of service) to specifically forbid doing that.
so, as always, we do what we can :)
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
That's disappointing 馃槥

@dmitrizagidulin
@csarven I am (as does the Credible Web CG, of course). Unfortunately, it's an extremely hard (and mostly political / social) problem, not really technical.
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
@csarven not 100% positive on what you mean by "working on" but logically, the pneumonia concern could be relevant if the wearing of a face mask causes your immune system to drop in effectiveness
Sarven Capadisli
@csarven
@Scythesniper I meant along the lines of social and technical as @dmitrizagidulin said.
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
@csarven gotcha, I would concur with @dmitrizagidulin in that case for the most part
I finally got my NSS setup and running, I feel like I'm back in the 90's to an extent
Sarven Capadisli
@csarven
And what a feeling that is.
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
right? the feeling of teaching myself HTML all over again

Hi, I am very new to Solid. I am trying out the solid server, I've got it running using docker. I have logged in with my solid.community and here comes the stupid question - what else can I do with the server? :D I expected some UI other than a welcome/login screen. Is there a page that would explain the workflow with the solid server? I've read the github readme, but I am confused.
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
@WhyINeedToFillUsername I'm pretty new to it as well, from what I gather from the forums. Solid isn't ready for normal users yet, just app developers. When I was messing around with it earlier I couldn't get any app to work properly running the server on windows with docker
WhyINeedToFillUsername
@WhyINeedToFillUsername
and what did you try doing with it exactly? :)
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
I just tried to use the apps that have already been developed, I tried about 10 of them, I was able to get some of them to at least see data I added to my solid pod but none of them could manipulate it even though I gave them access to do so.
Mark Hughes (happybeing/theWebalyst)
@happybeing
I think setting up your own server is possible but as you've found, can be difficult. If you want to explore the potential of Solid apps you can create an account on somebody else's server such as https://solid.community. Hopefully it will be easier to host your own server, but I think it will always be for a small proportion of the population. I can envisage it being bundled with other products, but that defeats the object of self hosting to a significant extent (decentralisation, knowing what code is being run, independence of profit seeking companies etc).
Scythesniper
@Scythesniper
@theWebalyst yeah, I didn't expect it to be easy, I was hoping that development would be further along than it is and setting up a node on your own device would have been slightly more simplified. I am pretty sure it wasn't working because there are things I didn't setup, and I definitely did not make any likely necessary changes to the way my node server accesses the internet, this may have been why stuff wasn't working. I'd love to get involved more and help make things streamlined but I would need a lot of help and guidance. Probably more than most people in the community are willing to give.
Mark Hughes (happybeing/theWebalyst)
@happybeing
I wouldn't assume that. You may not always get a quick response but I've not seen anyone turned away. Setting up the server is something not many people are familiar with though, but I think the folks at Inrupt would be able to help. If you want to have a go, ping Mitzi to see if anyone there can help.
