Hello. I am trying to understand authentication strategies for microservices. The consensus seems to be to authenticate once at the api gateway, issue a signed JWT and have all of your downstream services validate it. However is there a pattern which allows baking this authentication functionality into each service, so that the api gateway can just be a router? I would like to be able to run each service semi-independently, so having to spin up an api gateway in addition to the service and auth-service is cumbersome.
