Hi everyone
How come that the Spyder IDE is licenced under the MIT license while it uses PyQT5 (which is licensed under the GPL license I believe)?

Hi @h4k1m0u
The code of spyder is MIT licensed. If you want to use it, you probably need pyqt too, which is GPL, or pyside, which is LGPL.
Similarly, a lot of R packages are MIT licensed. If you want to execute them, you will need an implementation of the language. The only one available is GPL licensed.

@SylvainCorlay I thought that if you include a GPL code into your own code, the latter had to be GPL-licensed as well, isn't that so?

That is right. We don't include gpl code .
no code in the spyder repo is gpl
a bundle distribution of pyqt + spyder would be gpl.

@SylvainCorlay I understand, thank you (as long as the GPL code isn't included, it isn't necessary to change the license).
