Hi everyone, just a question out of curiosity. How difficult would it be to write a spyder-plugin for a python-console, similar to the one that was dropped for maintainability reasons? I am still trying to get used to the ipython console, and it works in most cases, but it just has quite a few quirks (e.g. slow restart if things hang, not being able to show how long it was running etc) that make certain projects a lot less flexible. Therefore I thought I might try my luck at developing a plugin which allows me to bring back the old console :-).

@jpoeppel, although it's possible to create a third-party plugin for the old Python console, you won't get much of it because the Python console was highly intertwined with the Editor, the Variable Explorer and the main window, and we removed all the code that made the bridge between them
Instead, please open an issue about the missing functionality in the IPython console, so we can add it in a future release. We thought we ported the most important features from the Python console, but we are open to hear from the community what we still need to improve :-)

Yes @jpoeppel I encourage you to open an issue and list all the problems. I think we can really solve most problems, but haven't gotten around to do it.

not being able to show how long it was running

This can be enabled

slow restart if things hang

We have an idea to make this experience much better

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Would you prefer one ticket including all the things I noticed, or rather individual issues?

@goanpeca I opened issue #5759, it might also include an actual bug I noticed with the "Stop current command" button
