Does anyone have any advice for installing spyder with pyenv?

@hyperevo, we don't support those kind of installations. We only support Anaconda

As far as I can tell I need to install it with pip for it to use the correct version of python through pyenv. I know all of the documentation says not to install with pip, but it seems like the only option. I managed to successfully install it with pip but I dont know how to start the IDE now.
ah I see
But if i did manage to install it with pip, how would I go about opening the IDE?
can I import spyder into a python file then start it from there?

seems like the only option

Is there a reason why Anaconda won't work for you?

I need to use a python version that isn't supported by my operating system. I need to use python 3.6.5 and I am using debian 9
So I was told I need to use pyenv to get around that
I tried installing python 3.6 from the unstable package and it broke my operating system. had to reinstall linux lol

Right, that's why its handy to install things in virtualenvs/venvs
But in any case, you can just install Anaconda and you'll be all set.
No need to fiddle with pyenv. Anaconda installs separately from your system Python and can further create isolated conda-env environments easily.

really? so will anaconda allow my system to keep using python 3.5 and let me use python 3.6 for an application?

Yes, exactly. Its totally separate, and you can also easily use multiple python and package versions all within Anaconda without any fancy trickery or fear of breaking anything, with isolated conda-env environments.
Even create a new python2 environment if you still need it for something.
