I created a python 2 env in anaconda , opened spyder and pointed it at that interpreter, it needed spyder kernels so I tried to install it with the conda command line, when that didnt work i installed it from navigator. spyder still cant start a kernel / ipython session.

@paulgureghian_twitter, there's a bug in 3.3.0 that doesn't allow to do that, but it'll be fixed in 3.3.1
@dakyion, please post a screenshot of the problem you're getting with Latex to better understand what's failing for you

Do you have LaTeX installed on your system (e.g. MikaTeX, or maybe TeXLive?)

I did only install the anaconda and then use spyder from it , I did check the box to use sympolic math
and I checked that sympy is installed

Search for it. If you don't have it, install MiKTeX or TeXLive

Unless you installed it, or it is a university machine that has it pre-installed (or maybe a work machine, but likely not) then you'll need to install it. I am very shortly going to be re-writing the tutorial since it is very out of date, so that's something I'll make sure to mention. Thanks!

If you want to do GUI-heavy programming, its quite possible to do in Spyder (since Spyder itself is developed in Spyder), but it might not be the best choice depending on the project vs. something with e.g. a dedicated GUI builder or other similar tools.

@ccordoba12 Don't you do computational physics with Spyder, if I remember correctly?
Or do you use something else for that?
