I have flask 1.0.2 installed in a Python 3.6 conda env. I installed flask through navigator and pip.

This has nothing to do with Spyder. As you can see from the traceback, you named your file which is naturally conflicting with the name of the Flask package. Please name it something else and try again, thanks.

through navigator and pip.

Never install anything through pip if you can avoid it, due to the chance of conflicts and install issues contaminating your environment.

@Naba7 Hey, that's great to hear! We're actually figuring out exactly what we want to include there (and a lot depends on whether other funding proposals get accepted or not), but we plan to get that done in the next week and can let you know accordingly (I believe the due date is Feb. 6). Thanks!

@rmarcost_twitter Not sure, but you can try the steps listed in the Spyder Troubleshooting Guide, specifically the Basic First Aid and Emergency CPR sections, which resolve the great majority of Spyder installation issues.

Make sure you're launching Spyder from the Start menu shortcut, not Anaconda Navigator, since Navigator can sometimes have bugs that are beyond our control and its also much faster and more efficient to do so. Also, something like that may be due to security, antivirus or firewall programs on your system, so you should try temporarily disabling them and if the problem goes away. It could be graphics card-related issues; try updating drivers; if you have e.g. both an Intel and a Nvidia or AMD GPU, try disabling one or the other; and try running conda install pyqt=5.6 qt=5.6 from the Anaconda prompt and then running Spyder again. You can also try installing Spyder into an isolated environment, with

conda create -n spyder-env python=3.6
activate spyder-env
conda install spyder
