@low-ham Sure, what's the problem? I can't promise anything if its not Spyder-related, but I can at least try to point you in the right direction.

Hi guys. Thanks for the awesome work. I was wondering if there is any chance to have the variable explorer open tabs within the current window, instead of new windows?
when I select to view eg. a pandas dataframe
for instance as a new tab in the editor area

I don't think we have something like that currently planned explicitly, although with the right code you could use the proposed "Viewer" pane to display the contents of a given dataframe, perhaps even including live-update capabilities. However, I'd think it might be possible with the some work to make the Variable Explorer dialogs dockable as panes (i.e. making them QDockWidgets) to the main window, which then could be tabbed between and moved to any desired size and location, if someone (including yourself) was willing to implement it.

@CAM-Gerlach that might be really cool actually. Might look into it
BTW there's another thing. Mainly, there is a bit of lag in cursor movement in the editor (MacOS here)
The movement is not fluid at all, but sort of jumpy. and when I release it, it still goes for 2-3 lines
Also, takes a long time to highlight occurrences of a keyword/variable
Don't know if it's related, might all have to do with updating the editor
I've got a MBP from 2015, hardware should not be a problem

@silviu-oprea Also, takes a long time to highlight occurrences of a keyword/variableI do seem to notice some cursor movement and typing lag on Windows 8.1 at least in Spyder 4 after I'd been using it heavily for a while, but I don't particularly recall anything like that happening in Spyder 3 recently. I can't really fairly compare on Linux since I mostly run it on VMs at the moment.

Also, takes a long time to highlight occurrences of a keyword/variable

This may be due to the configurable delay for this feature activating; check under Preferences > Editor > Display > Highlight Occurrences After. On both Spyder 3 and Spyder 4, for a 600 line file on a relatively modest machine, the delay was essentially instant once I turned it down to 100 ms, the minimum possible (the default is 1000 ms).

OK Thanks. BTW how do I install plugins, such as spyder-notebook, when running from source (python bootstrap.py)? If I do conda install -c spyder-ide spyder-notebook, it attempts to also install spyder (older version).
And regarding the new dark theme, it's awesome! I was wondering if I could change the main color though, it seems to be dark blue-ish, which does not go very well with popular editor themes such as zenburn, which go towards brown

We'll need to update the plugins to support Spyder 4 once the new plugin API is stabilized, which probably won't happen for a bit, but they should be easier to create and maintain once that's done. You could give them a try if you really want by following the copy-paste instructions on our Plugin page, although they probably won't work for now or at least have compatibility issues.

I was wondering if I could change the main color though

That's not currently possible, sorry, but something like that could be added eventually if there's enough interest.
