I haven't modified the sidebar at all except for css
the only html I've modified is the header
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
I see. If it happend with a non-modified version, we should fix it. However, we have to rule out that the error is in your modifications.
For this reason we need the reproducible case without modifications.
GeckoThePecko
@bernie-g
Okay I'll try to reproduce it without any modifications
Hm, it seems to work fine without modifications. I guess I'll have to start reverting my changes one by one
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
Okay great, thanks for investigating 😊
GeckoThePecko
@bernie-g
I see. I'm trying to move the tabs into the header instead of below it and I'm doing that by overriding the tabs block in main.html and making it empty, and then adding that same html into the header, but thats what seems to break it. Any ideas on how I could fix that?
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
you'll probably need some CSS to replicate the default tabs behavior for the navigation. It's all entirely solved with CSS. Check out _tabs.scss in the repository.
GeckoThePecko
@bernie-g
Okay, I'll take a look, thanks.

Pardon the stupid question, I'm new to this. If I want to modify a defined CSS property like a color, is there a difference in priority between an "extra" stylesheet versus an override stylesheet? I'm currently using !important to accomplish this, in my extra.css.
I hope the question makes sense. If I want to, for instance, modify a property defined in main.css, do I need to create an override stylesheet at overrides/material/.../main.css for it to work?
GeckoThePecko
@bernie-g
I'm pretty sure you just have to add all your styles into an extra stylesheet, I don't think you can override them
1 reply
I'm using !important too and it works fine
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
Overrides are mainly intended for partials (*.html), not assets, so extra stylesheet is the way to go ✌️

@tmeuze
Thank you. I was trying to implement the home.html override you use on the demo, and am having a difficult time changing the colors. On that note, do you take issue with reusing the homepage you've built here? https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
I already thought avout abstracting it into a template, but its so custom - it doesnt make any sense, as you cannot populate it with Markdown. But I have a howto on my list which should explain how to achieve it.
Some OSS projects copied the template and adjusted it. Maybe take a look how they did it, e.g. https://www.bfe-networks.net/en_us/

@tmeuze
Thank you so much, that's a great resource! By the way, is there a term to describe the SVG "wave" you have - a mask?
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
It's a layered by image, all contained in the override CSS

@tmeuze my site is a work in progress, but I've got a highly modified version of the theme at idea-sandbox.com/site/

hi. I'm sure I had researched this topic in the past but can't find it again.
is it possible to make it so each section in the ToC has an actual page associated with it?
left side: actual, right side: what I want
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
Sections cannot have pages. That‘s a limitation of MkDocs. I think I saw a workaround sone time ago, but Material does not support it.
Oleh Prypin
@oprypin
mhmm thanks.
i'm sure i was on to something
considering mkdocs/mkdocs#2081
but why did i give up and forget everything :D

@shenruisi
Does mkdocs-material support main content localization?
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
Material is only a theme, so the question is whether MkDocs supports it. I dont know any plugin that does that but you could build multiple docs, one for each language.

Believe I stumbled upon a bug. Can someone else with Safari (macOS) confirm that they see a scrollbar in the top navigation bar, as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/4pHYFLX ?
Want to confirm before making an issue

Looks fine in Safari for me
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
I'm also not seeing a scrollbar on the latest Safari (14)

@bernie-g
Any ideas why adding the macro plugin just removes the search bar? Literally not changing anything else, the search bar just doesn't exist anymore.
Ah never mind, apparently adding it makes mkdocs think that the search bar plugin installed anymore, so adding it manually fixes it.

Thinking about the “Better support for wide screens feature” in the Prairie Fire, I came across Sidenotes in tufte.css which mimics a style Edward Tufte uses in his classic data visualisation books.

Sidenotes are like footnotes, except they don’t force the reader to jump their eye to the bottom of the page, but instead display off to the side in the margin.

Sidenotes is also a style used by iA.net who make the award winning iA Writer app.

Could Sidenotes be a possibility for the “better support for wide screens feature”?

Martin Donath
@squidfunk
That's pretty cool. Maybe there could be something crafted using Admonitions, but it won't currently work with the sidebars. We would have to get rid of them.

BTW, if anybody wants to share his experience with Insiders, good or bad, I'm always interested! I want to make it as awesome as possible, so it feels worth the amount of money spent.

Hi, does anyone know how to wrap text on long code block lines?
Lars
@wilhelmer
What's the best way to determine the current color scheme via JS?
document.body.getAttribute("data-md-color-scheme")?
Or is there anything else
Martin Donath
@squidfunk
Nope, that's the way to go
