@bucaran
Can you provide examples of basic CLI apps that use Soil? Regards.
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Of course!
I have one example app that can be used as a starter template for your own tools and a full stack js framework built using soil-cli
Jame
@jamemackson
So @jhliberty, it's looking like I'll be starting a little project soon to create a simple cli to automate some disaster recovery processes with aws and was thinking about using soil-cli as the base 😊
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Woo! That's awesome news!
What will it need to do?
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Also I'm cool with helping out if we need to add or change anything to it
Jame
@jamemackson
Initially it'll probably have one command to generate new ami's of instances in an aws account. We're moving their hosting there and it seems no one needs to schedule back up images lol
Then eventually we may automate some functionality for if a server fails to
(Ugg gitter on the phone) anyways to restore a new instance based on the most recent backups
Nothing too crazy...
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Cool that seems like it shouldn't be too difficult! Just lemme know, I'm usually on gitter and screen hero (I'm pretty sure we are connected on sh already too)
Jame
@jamemackson
nice, I’m sure I’ll have questions :)
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
There are a couple things I added to seeds that I'll probably tweak a little bit and then move the implementation down to soil.
Jame
@jamemackson
right on, once I’m into the code a bit I can likely help out on more with both projects. I started to look at the example soil-cli project and seeds but could tell I needed to spend more time than I had… but I’m guessing I’ll kick that project off at work later this week or early next week.
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Like the alias/flag mappings
Jame
@jamemackson
ahh yea that is nice to have generally so it makes sense to have in soil
you up late or early? ;)
I am up late; sick kiddo who doesn’t want to sleep and working on converting a sane app from bootstrap to semantic-ui… but I should to hit the rack… but I’ll chat with you soon I’m sure.
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Late, just got back from a friends house - grilled up, had some drinks, jammed some guitar and played volley ball in the pool hah. The nice thing about really hot summers is pools are awesome at night
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Sounds fun (the conversion that is) - have a good night brotha
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
Oh btw, I have another example project for using soil.. It's slightly different than seeds or the example project.
Jame
@jamemackson
@jhliberty hey man, so I’m getting started on the project I was talking about, "aws-disaster-recovery” <- that’s an original name eh?
just got the boilerplate in place, but have a few questions for ya as this is my first cli I’m creating much less with soil-cli. hit me up when you’re around
John-Henry Liberty
@jhliberty
I'm around! What's up? :)
Jame
@jamemackson
Hey so I just got my kids from day care so I might be able to chat with my normal fluidity but I got the example project boilerplate and was looking thru the seeds code to pull a bit more of the base structure of the cli project but I know where to start creating the commands I want but what's the workflow for running the cli from my src? Is that where npm link comes in?
And what dictates what my cli command is called? Aka where you define seeds to be seeds? Is that something in package.json?
And sorry for such noob q's!
Jame
@jamemackson
Ok so I think reading the npm link docs answered my questions. Sorry I was being lazy and not RTFM
Jame
@jamemackson
I’ve run npm link in the root of my soil-cli based project and I am getting this error -bash: awsdr: command not found
where awsdr is the name of my package as defined by package.json
Jame
@jamemackson
also I’m noticing that there are many files that have a .es6 extension and a second with a .js extension. I’m assuming this has to do with transpiling es6 down, but which is the original/source file?
Ian VanSchooten
@IanVS
Original should be es6 files, based on the script in package.json
Jame
@jamemackson
nice, thanks @IanVS
I did figure out the issue with the command not being recognized, that was not having the .bin/mycommand file and the bin object in the packsage.json file… baby stepping it forward :)
now it’s complaining about class being a reserved word but I’m assuming that’s got to do with the transpiling, which I’m working on enabling now
Ian VanSchooten
@IanVS
I believe compiling should be jus npm run build-es5 no?
Or even npm run watch to compile whenever files are saved.
Jame
@jamemackson
not totally sure, I’m working on figuring that out now
npm run build works once I migrated the build script from seeds :)
Ian VanSchooten
@IanVS
Ah right, forgot you are working on your own.
Jame
@jamemackson
yea I’m getting going on the aws-disaster-recovery tool
Jame
@jamemackson
@jhliberty is there a reason you’re not using something like commander in soil-cli?
