    I would look at the 4d JSON server options. The new iOS mobile combined with the new object plan in 4d gives a possible roadmap. Wakanda’s only special sauce is the 4d connector. Everything else I have seen is just other solutions.

    Going back I looked at the 4d rest/mobile web pages. There are still references to Wakanda in 4D v17r3. They list this as the web standards solution for 4D still in the next r release.

    weird they just didnt shut it down and expand 4d server to include more of the parts to make web development easier

    Lauraunt R. is said to have said on a 4D summit that wakanda experience went into ORDA. 4D also has optimistic record locking as in wakanda and the database engine now do not differ much in features.
    Next logical step would be to add processes of type wakanda-javascript-interpreter to 4D. Would also require to add the functionality of studio's method editor to 4Ds structure editor. Add session store and may be some more.
    Certainly not as easy as it sounds, but may well be possible for the 4D/wakanda team (never doubt on their ingenuity).
    Wak merged into 4D would be great for 4Ds customer base as they could expand their backends with web front ends.
    4D brings backup/restore, stable and proven database, excellent process mangagement, report generator, detail and list forms in seconds to ease developtment.

    Disadvantages : no linux version, no open source, niche product, still hard to convince new developers to try.
    Studio was designed to be a web app in mind.

    If the mySQL connector would have been included in the free version think would have attracted more developers.

    Wakanda still has some unique features and it is sad to see it die in silence.
    Only logical reason for the silence I see is they still hope to find funding to continue.
    The wakanda page still advertises the product and development services so there is still hope.

    I just watched th 4d/ Wakanda episode for November. Interesting. The Wakanda section mentioned a new release in early 2019. The focus of the meeting segment was covering how they were doing app for a Texas school program. I just onset if the project was big enough that it was an all hands on deck for the job.

    Well, keeping the community informed about whats going on with wakanda have been a issue for years.
    But without the rapid development with dragdrop I dunno if I see why someone should pick wakanda over postgres w/postgrest.

    Compared to what I read about what postgres has to offer: model editor, javascript, triggers for entities and attributes, collections, sets, mutex, session store, user/group directory w/editor, debugger

    Yes, I also liked many of those things, but I really dont want to bother using time on something that feels like it dying each year.

    • Model editor is great, but SQL is pretty strong to when it comes to reporting. Model editor also messed up a lot. You can get model editors for sql databases too.
    • javascript, yes I like that but database cant sum 0.1 + 0.2 when using database sum, get a feeling js might be the cause here. Can also use Nodejs.
    • triggers... sql have triggers, before/after/instead of.
    • sets and collection... the entityset/selection part of wakanda is really cool here, main reason why I though wakanda would be great for web application when you needed to work with collection/selections. This part would have been cool to have as postgres extension.
    • session store, you could use redis with nodejs for the same I guess.
    • user/group directory, it was nice but would have been better if they expanded it more. I remember I made a custom for a hobby app. but using postgrest it looks like can also use the built in user/groups in postgres directly
    • debugger, for js on server side vscode/chrome is pretty good for this. sql might be a little harder but Im sure there are debuggers/code linters for this too.

    So guess I kinda like SQL more and more. Its pretty strong and flexible language.
    I usually just use knexjs/exceljs and sqllite lately for automating some work on data I need others to fix.

    Btw, not trying to create any war, so please do not take any of this wrong :smile:
    Mostly just feels weird how a company dont want to be more open on what they want to do, plan to do.

    If it weren’t for the 4d requirement I would consider other options. But until other options are available I’ll be stuck here. Since I have to use a custom library to use the 4d authtication system.

    @erlicthemad 4d looks like a nice solution if customer are willing to pay for the user lisences. Ive tried it a fw years ago, was easy to get results with it. And from the looks of the homepage they have improved many parts.

    I have 30 years of data in 4d. Moving to something else would be a nightmare. Almost all office workflow is in 4d. Started in 1985. The Wakanda deal is a much newer aspect. But the 4d for IOS may cause workflow adjustments.
    Since I’m a paid enterprise client I have a personal contact for tech questions. For the Wakanda team it’s likely a resource allocation issue. No money from that place means lowest attention level to resource.

    The WAKANDA wysiwyg page editor went away when they went to the 2.x line. All the old GUI tools ended with the 1.x line. Now it’s Angular.

    Announcement for the Wakanda Community version

    Hello,
    My name is Ricardo Mello and I have been with the community for the last +5 years in different roles. I am writing you today in the name of our team. We would like to thank you for your effort and contributions to our community BUT unfortunately, the Wakanda team will no longer be supporting the Wakanda Community version - starting at the next release (v2.7).

    Our main focus will be the Wakanda Enterprise Version and its paid customers. If you are a Wakanda Enterprise user, the v2.7 will be available for you before the end of February.

    Unfortunately, as you have witnessed along the years, we have failed to create an open source ecosystem, despite the effort done by the community. That is our reality and we have decided to focus only on the Enterprise version to better serve our clients.

    We will keep the community repository on GitHub and we will work with the community if any changes/commits/pushes are proposed.

    If you would like to move an application from the Community version to the Enterprise version, please contact me at ricardo.mello@wakanda.io and I will help you on the process of migration, licensing and support.

    @rmello4d It's been a slow and painful death. It must have been very hard for the team. It was a great vision but unfortunately overtaken by other developments. The road to success is littered with discarded failures. I loved Wakanda too and I am grateful to all the team for the journey we all went on together. It was a great ride.

    @chriscurnow Chris, thank you, indeed it was hard to abandon the Community project. The Enterprise project is moving forward. We are soon releasing the 2.7 and already preparing the 2.8. We will keep you posted...

    @rmello4d That's good to hear. As a startup we cannot afford to go to the Enterprise version. We took the difficult decision some time ago to move over to Firebase. But I will continue to watch Wakanda with great interest. It was a big part of my life. I wish you all every success.

    I’m just wondering is any way to access 4D methods from wakanda. My 4D is using MySQL remote database, I’d like to access 4D method which connects to MySQL and does some calculations in 4D and I’d like to retrieve processed data in 4D methods to wakanda. Is that possible?

    A 4D method called by wakanda can return a value, so it should be possible.

    Never tried the 4D connector, just read the 4D and wakanda documentations.

    @Fuchssystems actually if you can get the data into a 4D process then its easy. When you call the 4D function you just return the values from the database in the $0 value from 4D. that will then be passed as the return value to your Wakanda JS function. Working with 4D is not that difficult. Once you get the connector working right. I have a 67 part solution that I am running that coonects to my Backend 4D database. You may have to ake sure your return value is in JSON format.
