    The case against is: stability; it takes some work to unpick all the links; sentimentality
    Your opinions are appreciated (we'll obviously wait for people in various timezones to have a say before we take an action)
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    On Slack: I don't want it as it raises a bar to new people (Gitter is super simple chat tech), it isn't open source, and it would distract from raising Issues on repos (which is much more transparent, open, traceable)

    REPOST BUMP/STICKY https://gitter.im/weaverbel/LibraryCarpentry?at=5947c6b71c868fcd2666c26b

    Hi all. We are proposing to stop using this chatroom (archiving it if possible..), leave a message here to say it is closed and move to 3 chat rooms:

    I feel we need some kind of Quorum

    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    I agree about Slack: it has its place but has a fairly high barrier to entry — plus I'm fed up of having so many different Slack teams to switch between
    Cam Macdonell
    @cmacdonell
    :+1: for Gitter over Slack
    Thomas Guignard
    @timtomch
    Same for me. Go Gitter. And huge thanks to @weaverbel for letting this community chat on her virtual front porch for so long.
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    @timtomch I think @weaverbel rather likes the idea of inviting us all to her porch, virtual or otherwise.
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    My thanks also to @weaverbel for hosting us for so long!
    Cam Macdonell
    @cmacdonell
    I'm not sure this was mentioned, but the big win from my perspective for Gitter is newcomers can lurk without even having to login.
    Richard Vankoningsveld
    @richyvk
    Please don't switch to Slack! Gitter FTW!
    Tim Dennis
    @jt14den
    I want the rocking chair on @weaverbel’s porch
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    Yours @jt14den !!!
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    Feeling like an empty nester as you all prepare to leave home sob! sob!
    Only kidding !
    Yes +1 to Cam on gitter vs slack. Slack feels too exclusive!
    +1 to @jezcope on too many slack teams. My problem too.
    Tim Dennis
    @jt14den
    @weaverbel Well, we are in the era of the boomerang kids, keep our room ready just in case
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    And dinner's in the oven @jt14den ;-)
    Tim Dennis
    @jt14den
    the one think i like about slack is disposable channels — easy to create for projects, etc.
    but yeah, too many teams! boo teams
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    We will never want to dispose of Library Carpenters @jt14den !
    Richard Vankoningsveld
    @richyvk
    @jnothman replied to you here: https://gitter.im/LibraryCarpentry/Lobby to coax you over to the new room :)

    proposed closing message
    Welcome to Library Carpentry. This was our first discussion room, but we have now outgrown it so it is now closed. Replacing it are three rooms:
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    👍
    Owen Stephens
    @ostephens
    Are we going to archive this chat somewhere? Apart from that +1 to proposed msg
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    @ostephens i don't think there's an archive option — you can either delete a channel or leave it open
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    i think the best option is: 1. leave the above message in this channel to signpost people in the right direction; 2. update as many existing links on the web as we can to point to https://gitter.im/LibraryCarpentry/Lobby; 3. a handful of us remain in this room with notifications turned on so we can point people to the new places if they ask questions here
    Owen Stephens
    @ostephens
    @jezcope there is a node package that is meant to archive gitter rooms, but I couldn’t get it to work yesterday - but it suggests it’s possible if we want to. But if this is remaining here then that’s fine - I don’t suppose we’ll have much reason to refer to it after a few weeks
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    1. Agreed. 2. I will take that as an action. 3. Happy to.
    Is it rude to batch add the 132 people here to the new rooms? :)
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    I would add them to lobby and let them find their way to the others if they want to drop by?
    Owen Stephens
    @ostephens
    +1 to @weaverbel suggestion
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    Okay. Is there a non-manual way of doing that?
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    Dunno ... Not a Gitter expert.
    Maybe it's enough to leave the instructions?
    We can tweet the new links too.
    Can anyone tell me if we still need this file, or whether it's a 'leftover'? Doesn't seem to be linked from anywhere and header is strange: https://github.com/data-lessons/library-git/blob/gh-pages/index.md
    Whoops - posting in lesson-dev room now

    I've changed all the urls to reflect the new gitter. If you find the old one lingering, point to https://gitter.im/LibraryCarpentry instead!
    Tim Dennis
    @jt14den
    Who’s going to get the last chat on this thing? :)
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    It'll be a competition ;-)
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    But whoever it is, please turn off the lights ;-)

    This reminds me of the last day of Phantasy Star Online. That was a sad day :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS_bQPWuzCI
