    @weaverbel
    @richyvk I am leaving my paid zoom account at QCIF today but hope to have zoom in my new job so can probably set them up.
    Just letting you all know in advance I am running instructor training in Sydney Mon-Tue next week so will be in radio silence while I do that. If you ping me and I don't answer that is why.
    The import.io session went OK @timtomch - not my finest teaching as I was so ill but people liked it. Webhose.io offers 1000 free scrapes as opposed to import.io's 500. but given import.io resets each month, it;'s still a pretty accessible tool. Will check out your hidden gems - would have been good to know on Wednesday !
    Hello @BreedaHerlihy_twitter I am about to start as Community Development Lead for the Carpentries so I am happy to work with you to get a Library Carpentry workshop off the ground. I have access to the SWC database of instructors etc so might be able to find you some people who can help out. You can email me at bweaver AT carpentries.org. Happy to chat.
    Great to have interest from Ireland - I hope to spend a month in the UK next spring so am happy to visit Ireland at some point and get things going!
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    @BreedaHerlihy_twitter Lots of news comes through the @libcarpentry twitter feed and lots of us tweet too. I just followed you.
    @mkuzak Good to know you can edit your own messages - my typos are multiplying ! Thanks for the tip.
    My last day at my UQ email address folks - please email to bweaver AT carpentries.org from today !
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    @ostephens I am going to get you certified TODAY.
    @ostephens You have taught, you have contributed to lessons, you have discussed lessons at great length. and you have done instructor training. DONE DEAL.
    Owen Stephens
    @ostephens
    @weaverbel thank you! Hope you are feeling better
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    @weaverbel Sorry. Okay. When you have time. Am I the only one really struggling to keep up with the chatter in this room?
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    No the chatroom is off the charts busy @drjwbaker !!! The price of success.
    Stay tuned @ostephens I have put in the request for your cert.
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    @drjwbaker @weaverbel at the risk of fragmentation, we could start a gitter community linked to the librarycarpentry github org and then set up some separate rooms for specific topics?
    Thomas Guignard
    @timtomch
    @weaverbel hope you'll get better! Not much of a hidden gem, little more than a collection of screenshots at this stage. I stopped writing up the lesson after getting that feedback from my class.
    Re: max number of queries. I was able to coax import.io to grant me a free temporary pro account so I wouldn't run into the limit as I was developing the lesson. It wasn't a straightforward process however... quite a lot of back and forth. Worth a try.
    Tim Dennis
    @jt14den
    @richyvk have the pro zoom account here at ucla. I can set up a meeting if needed
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    @jezcope @weaverbel I'm not sure Gitter is the right technology for seperate discussion rooms, but I'm willing to try. What I don't want is a room for each lesson. What about something like:
    • General/Main
    • Lesson Development
    • Workshop Development
    • Social
    (I'm loath to suggest Slack..)
    Mark Laufersweiler
    @laufers
    The other choice is HipChat, and that brings with it its own set of issues. @jezcope @weaverbel
    I figure we're already here so we might as well see if it works. If not, we try something different.
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    Let's give those rooms a go. I still prefer Gitter to slack cos anyone can pop in.
    Also good to have chat rooms not linked to my github. Better to be linked to LC which makes more sense. But I have loved having you all 😀
    Richard Vankoningsveld
    @richyvk
    https://morph.io/ something else to mention in the web scraping lesson??
    Cam Macdonell
    @cmacdonell
    @weaverbel did you want to chat about South Africa sometime?
    Anelda van der Walt
    @anelda
    @cmacdonell we'll probably have a discussion about the SA LC workshop the week after next. I have to set a date. Would you like to join us? @weaverbel thanks for your email and apologies for not responding. Will set up new dates tomorrow my time.
    Cam Macdonell
    @cmacdonell
    @anelda Happy to!
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    Hi @cmacdonell I do. Last week just a disaster though as I caught a very bad cold plus I was finishing up at my old job. Teaching Mon Tue this week and then I can finally do some talking.
    @anelda I have been too sick to plan anything but my next sneeze. And that didn't work out too well. Finally on the mend now 😀
    Hey @ostephens Your instructor certificate should be winging its way to you shortly. Yee ha
    Richard Vankoningsveld
    @richyvk
    @jt14den Thanks for the Zoom offer. We'll see how we go with free account - 40 min max chat might actually be a good thing!
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    @/all Further discussion now over at https://gitter.im/LibraryCarpentry/Lobby
    Belinda Weaver
    @weaverbel
    @/all I now think we should use this one for social and chit chat since people already know it and it is kinda embedded in all sorts of places and use the other new ones for serious work. So maybe delete the new 'social'? Or not?
    Jez Cope
    @jezcope
    @weaverbel sounds sensible to me
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    @weaverbel Can we pin a post in to this chat room or add a "this is what is it for" header to the page?
    Joel Nothman
    @jnothman
    Thanks for the comments @timtomch and sorry for the slow response. I'm not sure to what extent Portia has improved. Its interface is not as smooth as other visual scrapers (like import.io, yes, @richyvk), and feels like it has been engineered to align with scrapy rather than ux-oriented development practice. Its advantage is that it's open source and can be translated to scrapy. Launching it (if not using the paid, hosted version) requires launching a docker which is easy for someone with tech background but has some technical overhead for others.
    @richyvk: Does xpath make you shudder because you had some prior familiarity with CSS? Because it's more tightly tied to the document's tree structure? Because slashes are less friendly than spaces? Some other reason? I'm curious
    James Baker
    @drjwbaker
    Seems the /topic slash command no longer works :(
    Scratch that, I think only @weaverbel have permissions :)
    Breeda Herlihy
    @BreedaHerlihy_twitter
    Thanks @weaverbel for the additional suggestions. I'll get in contact via e-mail.
    Richard Vankoningsveld
    @richyvk
    @c-martinez @mkuzak firing up the zoom shortly. Hope you're around for a chat. https://zoom.us/j/913312113
