@EliasJorgensen
@yamalight How would you structure a react/redux app, that needs to be highly scalable?
I've been scouring the web, but can't really find any good resources on the subject
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
It's for the admin part of the ordering system, used by stands at Roskilde Festival, for ordering electricity, plumbing etc.
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
@EliasJorgensen dammit, again gitter didn't notify me about messages :(
scalable in what way?
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
Sounds annoying..
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
I'm thinking about creating a new chat in Discord and asking everyone to use it. Discord is just way more reliable than gitter :\
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
Scalable in the sense that it's as manageable (in lack of better word) as possible, as the codebase grows fairly large
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
create stand-alone components (as in - separate packages), assemble everything using them
I'm going to be livestreaming finishing up of front-end Jest tests in a few minutes, come join :) http://twitch.tv/yamalight
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
Separate packages?
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
@EliasJorgensen yep
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
As in having a separate repo with components amd publishing it as an npm module?
And*
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
not necessarily separate repos / modules, can be just in different folders
depends on size
but yeah, if we're talking very large apps ( > ~20 components) - stand-alone repos and modules
I so far had only one project that required something like this
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
It's basically a frontend rewrite for an ordering system used by every stand on Roskilde Festival, for ordering everything from water/vvs to electricity, toilets and signs. There's a bunch of stuff, it's gonna be a nightmare. But the current system is CakePHP v2, so basically everything is gonna be better than that lol
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
so, that means the system is (more or less) stable
I'd take a close look at what's there first
and eval if you really want to have separate components
maybe just a well thought-through monolith project with good structure would be enough
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
The backend works pretty well, basically no problems there, but the front end is incredibly slow and a huge mess. CakePHP doesn't really do a good job on that point. We've basically decided that we are gonna gradually convert the system to a rest api (also useful for other applications), and create a more modern front-end that feels a lot faster to the end users.
But yeah, a separate repo for react components etc. Just sound like added complexity. Although it can lead to a cleaner main codebase, so in that regard it seems nice.
Btw, i noticed that you've switched to VS Code from Atom? How come?
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
yup. code's intellisense is pretty awesome
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
Oh nice, i haven't really played with it that much. How is the customizability compared to atom?
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
about the same, I'd say
Elias Jørgensen
@EliasJorgensen
Hmm, i might try it out then
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight
it's pretty cool. been using it for past couple of months already. haven't even started atom after that
Tim Ermilov

Hello! Which atom plugin are you using ti browse through the project files while writing the import's from?
To* autocompletion gone bad :D

@yamalight
Hey @Kasstorr ! Sorry, didn't get any gutter notifications again :(
I've published the list of tools / plugins I use over at reddit, you can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuildingWithJS/comments/4ty5yn/what_applications_do_you_use_for_development/d5l9951
I'll probably setup a discord server over the weekend. It works way better than gitter :|
Tim Ermilov
@yamalight

Hey people! Because gitter has become unreliable over time due to bugged notifications - I'd setup a new discord server where from now on I'll be happy to chat with you all. Use this link to join it: https://discord.gg/hnKCXqQ

I'll still check this channel from time-to-time, but since I don't get any notifications, don't expect quick answers :(
