@ybur-yug
ugh the problem ive had with the one decent recruiter ive worked with is that every role hes gottem me through the interview process for has ended with 'well were actually looking for a senior engineer, not midlevel'. The jobs werent posted publicly and they explicitly said senior engineer once I wised up and asked to actually see them after.
how the fuck do you promote yourself on linkedin? ive honestly never used it. I do get a lot of recruiter spam though. but its all from massive firms with wretched reviews online
has anyone here had luck with whose hiring on HN? or does that fall in the same bag?
also i go to every meetup remotely related to my skillset in columbus, but sadly there are only 2 (3 total. the other is ember.js and ive been to a few and found them lacking)
they do a 'whose hiring' section at the start of both, and lo and behold theyre only all after senior engineers too. seems to be a bit paradoxical lol
22nd century staffing and TEKsystems are the two that are always fucking bothering me (recruiting firms)

@RickCarlino
Yeah, it's not easy. You're probably at that weird threshold in your career where you're not junior nor senior.
Just need to do a crap ton of "politic-ing"
yburyug
@ybur-yug
le sigh
Rick Carlino
@RickCarlino
The online listing will all just be a waste of time. Best thing you can hope for is to bump into someone who can get you the job while simultaneously working on tangible things that prove you're a good dev.
It's weird though, one day, you're going to cross that threshold and then you don't have to deal with the bullshit.
I remember precisely when I hit that point myself.

@ybur-yug
in the interim ive got a mother with medical bills that need paid and am running low on contracts. lol. i need to get crafty with this fast.
did you end up going the recruiter route?
Rick Carlino
@RickCarlino
I got one job through a recruiter and the other two via pavement pounding
yburyug
@ybur-yug
i just scheduled a talk to give at next weeks ruby meetup on practical data science in ruby
Rick Carlino
@RickCarlino
oh and another one via companies looking for me. So technically a recruiter, but inhouse
yburyug
@ybur-yug
im totally willing to relocate. know the name of a recruiter worth emailing nationwide?
Rick Carlino
@RickCarlino
Yeah- one sec. Gotta hop on a call
but yeah, you might be better off doing your own outreach
yburyug
@ybur-yug

thanks

meetups, collaborative work spaces, cold calling, cold emailing

@ybur-yug

@ybur-yug sorry for a late reply
neo vim is good but a lot of things don't work on different platforms, but its still usable
i explored tmate, which is based on tmux but kinda requires less setup
yburyug
@ybur-yug
Interesting. I've never had to do much setup for tmux myself. Just fire it up and start a session. Sidenote: Any idea why this build is failing?
/home/travis/.rvm/rubies/ruby-2.2.1/bin/ruby -I/home/travis/.rvm/gems

Ishan Khare
@ishankhare07
@ybur-yug which branch is it?
yburyug
@ybur-yug
master. you can see the failing build tag from travis in the README
just click it and it takes you to the latest failing one. It has been for a few and I havent had time to actually dig in
Brian Glusman
@bglusman
did you see actioncable alpha is out?
just remembered we both tried to look at source of gem when it was just a placeholder :-)
also wonder whether if/how this could change volt integration with rails picture, but not sure if I want to go down that rabbit hole again… not sure I don’t though :-)
Brian Glusman
@bglusman
oh, neat its built on celluloid
makes sense, but didn’t know, kind of reduces cost of using celluloid elsewhere in rails now maybe if using cable
oh and relies on redis too
unless thats just the examples
yburyug
@ybur-yug
have you started at that new consultancy yet @bglusman ?
Brian Glusman
@bglusman
yes!
started a few weeks ago, been on the bench/doing odd jobs, but starting first on site client next week
yburyug
@ybur-yug
nice. im about to join my first consultancy myself. hoping the change of pace from the startup world is nice haha. though the volume of projects sure will be different. excited, though.
Brian Glusman
@bglusman
nice
what company? still in Pittsburgh? (that’s where you are/were right?)
yburyug
@ybur-yug
I was in Columbus, actually. They're called Cometa. The office I'm joining is in San Juan, Puerto Rico
kind of a wild card but caribean life and no income tax cant be too bad
Brian Glusman
@bglusman
oh, wow
so you’re moving to PR?
that’s exciting, never been there
